Espanyol sign the top scorer of the Chinese Super League, Wu Lei | sports

Immersed in a deep crisis of results after adding only three of the last 30 in dispute, Espanyol announces the signing of Chinese striker Wu Lei. The new blue and white player is 27 years old, has been on loan from the Shanghai SIPG and has been the top scorer of the Chinese Super League in recent seasons.

The signing meets one of the promises of the president and maximum shareholder of Espanyol, the Chinese Chen Yansheng, who had already expressed his desire to incorporate the team to some figure of football in his country. Yansheng's idea is to reinforce the team and at the same time open the market share of the club in China.

Wu Lei, who can play as a forward and also in the two attacking ends, won the Chinese Superliga Golden Boot in 2018 and the previous five seasons was also the Chinese top scorer of the competition.

"The sports management of the club had been following the evolution of Wu Lei for some time, which had aroused the interest of many teams in the Premier League. However, the player preferred to opt for the Blue and Whites' offer both for the sports project and for the corporate one led by Rastar Group, "Espanyol said in a statement in reference to the business group of its president Yangsheng.

"For the RCD Espanyol, this is one of the most important sports bets in its modern history," adds the club's note. The sport managers, consider that the player has a huge potential and will be able to become one of the benchmarks of the template.

Wu Lei will compete for a position in the front with Borja Iglesias, Sergio García or Leo Baptistao. The new blue and white striker is an absolute international for the Chinese national team, with 61 internationals and 15 goals for his country, and he has been breaking records in the Superliga for years. He debuted as a professional player with 14 years and 10 months on September 2, 2006 becoming the youngest player to debut in the Chinese league.

Shanghai SIPG FC, the team of origin of the player, was proclaimed champion of the Chinese Super League in 2018, when he ended the monopoly of Guangzhou Evergrande, and Wu Lei was awarded as best player and top scorer after achieving 27 goals. In the last six years he has scored 102 goals in the Chinese Super League. Espanyol lost on Sunday against Real Madrid (2-4) and occupies the 15th place in the league with 24 points. In the Cup, he disputes the quarter-final tie against Betis, with which he tied one in the first leg.
