The Professor of Labor and Social Security Law at the ULPGC, Carmen Grau Pineda, has made an analysis on the effectiveness of equality plans, concluding that in 15 years it barely meets expectations. This study is published on the platform scientific dissemination ‘The Conversation’ in an article titled ‘Equality plans: the essential tool for the 21st century company ‘.

In this work, Carmen Grau points out that “the approval, in 2007, of the Organic Law for the effective equality of women and men (LOI) it was an incontestable legislative milestone. From its promulgation, equal opportunities and non-discrimination based on sex in labor organizations became a main beam of business management. ”

“Today all companies, regardless of the number of employees, must adopt, after negotiation, measures aimed at avoiding any type of employment discrimination between women and men, as well as arbitrate specific procedures for the prevention of these behaviors” and the measure The star of the LOI are the equality plans “a flexible and business tool that aims to improve the situation of everyone in the company, since its final objective is to achieve real equality”.

“However, the balance of almost fifteen years of LOI shows that the equality plans approved so far have achieved little,” says the professor.

“We are fully immersed in a time of change, with no possible reversal, in the relationship of equality between women and men. It is true that in recent decades there has been a notable increase in the participation of women in the labor market, but one of the characteristics of this market is the concentration of women and men in different economic sectors and occupations, as well as the different working conditions due to gender ”.

“We cannot ignore that the equality plans are, today, a laudable but naive attempt to achieve labor equity between men and women. Especially when the reality of the business fabric in Spain is that, in 2020, of the total number of companies nationwide (3,404,428), only 0.77% (26,369) have more than 50 workers in their charge ” .

The article concludes by stating that “it is time to act, there is a social obligation to comply with the mandate of real equality and that both the employer and union representation are capable of approving real, realistic, adapted and appropriate equality plans.”
