Electric self-consumption goes up by 80%


The number of photovoltaic self-consumption facilities increased by 80% in 2018 compared to 2017, to 1,153, although the installed power only increased by 40%, up to 27 megawatts (MW), due to the fact that most of the installations started up were of small size.

The Photovoltaic Yearbook of 2019, of the National Association of Producers of Energy Photovoltaic, Anpier, collects this data, which has been developed from the Administrative Record of Self-consumption of Energy Eléctrica, the only official reference regarding the territorial implementation of self-consumption, which was discontinued following the approval in October of the royal decree-law of measures for energy transition and consumer protection.

The number of installations with powers of up to 10 Kw increased by 143%, the number of those above 10 Kw increased by 58% and those of type 2 or could, according to the 2015 legislation, be discharged to the network, only 30%

The greatest number of photovoltaic self-consumption facilities is found, in this order, in the autonomous communities of Catalonia, Andalusia and Galicia.

These three communities are also those that group the greatest self-consumption capacity in terms of power, with Catalonia in first position, with 6.3 MW; followed by Galicia, with 5.9 MW and Andalucía, with 5.8 MW.

The three autonomous communities group more than 62% of the installed capacity and 56% of the total number of installations.

The Administrative Record of Self-consumption of Energy Electric will be replaced by a new one that follows the guidelines of Royal Decree 244/2019, of April 5, which regulates the administrative, technical and economic conditions of self-consumption of Energy electrical

The photovoltaic power installed in 2018 in Spain -40 megawatts (MW) – was three times the new installed capacity in 2017, although this figure is still much lower than the 2,721 MW installed ten years ago in 2008.

The Photovoltaic Yearbook of 2019, of the National Association of Producers of Energy Photovoltaic, Anpier, points out, based on data from Red Eléctrica de España (REE), that photovoltaic installed power in Spain increased in 2018 for the second consecutive year.

In 2017, 13 MW were installed, compared to 11 MW in 2016, when 5 MW were installed less than in 2015, the year in which the installed capacity was doubled a year earlier, 7 MW, the lowest level since 2008.

As explained by Anpier in its yearbook, in Spain the photovoltaic capacity installed in the autonomous communities represents only 4.5% of the installed electric power in the country and covers around 3% of the national demand.

Currently, there are three autonomous communities with more than 500 MW installed in each one: Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia and Extremadura, which lead the national photovoltaic map since the beginning of photovoltaics and which currently represent half of the national capacity.

In Spain there are more than 60,000 photovoltaic installations and its average size is less than 100 kilowatts (Kw), although the dimensions differ between autonomous communities.

For example, in Navarra there are 161 MW distributed in more than 9,000 installations, an atomisation derived from tax incentives for the small installations implanted by the regional government to promote photovoltaics.

In Extremadura, on the contrary, the number of plants does not reach 5,000, despite being one of the communities with the greatest installed power, and there the most usual size is 100 Kw.

The two auctions of renewable energies held in 2017, in which almost 4 gigawatts (GW) of photovoltaic power were awarded for its start-up before the end of 2020, make it foresee that the photovoltaic generation park will experience a rebound in 2019 and 2020.

In 2018, with the auction parks still in execution, photovoltaic power was barely connected beyond that intended for self-consumption.

Currently, there are requests for access to the network of more than 756 MW photovoltaic.
