El Negrn widens the emergency service with 28 new boxes - La Provincia

The University Hospital of Gran Canaria Doctor Negrín since yesterday with 28 more boxes in the emergency service, which are already operational. The new facilities are the result of the completion of the works, started since last August, with the purpose of expanding the unit and improving the quality of care offered to patients. In total, the hospital area has 116 posts at the service of the sick.

"The emergency service required an expansion of its space to provide more assistance devices, but when the demand exceeds our new offer we will continue to grow to provide adequate assistance, this area will provide privacy, comfort, and safety to the sick," he said. Yesterday Pedro Rodriguez, managing director of the grancanario hospital, during the inauguration of the space.

The initiative has made it possible to provide the 300 square meters additional, in response to the needs and demands of users. In fact, the unit registers an average of 250 views, "but only on Tuesday we attended a total of 310 people, for example," said Rodriguez, to explain how saturation sometimes occurs. "Of 100% of the consultations, only 11% requires income," he said. An amount, which by the way, "remains stable".

Therefore, another of the great challenges that the hospital is facing is to strengthen the Home Hospitalization (HADO). In a few weeks, we will reach an extension of 35 beds in HADO, so we can serve more patients in their homes. Doctors, nurses and social workers will act together with Primary Care so that these patients do not go to the Emergency Room, but are treated in their homes or in health centers. And if all these measures are not enough, we will find a professional way to treat them, "the director announced.

The restructuring of the service Emergency it goes hand in hand with an increase in the professional workforce, which will be translated into more cleaning staff, orderlies, doctors, nurses, and informants. "The economic evaluation is already done and we will gradually expand the number of doctors, we have started with one and we will get to where it is needed, the same will happen with the rest of the professional sectors," said Pedro Rodríguez.

The works are the result of five months of work "without any altercation having occurred within the space". As explained by the managing director, the process was subjected to different evaluations and opinions in which both the workers of the area and the different technical professionals intervened.

"We realized that there were three unused areas, one of which was the corridors of communication with the interior of the hospital, another corresponded to the family room, which had chairs that were barely used, and thirdly, a point of offices and warehouses of little use, therefore, these 28 beds have been installed without reducing space to other areas, "said the head of the health center.

The truth is that during the reform process two floors were enabled inside the hospital: the transition and the right 2A. Thus, patients who made use of the latter were transferred from yesterday to the new facilities. "But we will have to have that space prepared in case there is a high peak of assistance, if this happens, Negrín will not have any closed plant," assured the professional.

At the moment, the hospital will work with the emergency department and the transition plant. "This space is vital for us and has a schedule from 07:00 to 22:00 hours, and if the healthcare needs require it, we will not hesitate to open it again 24 hours a day," he said. the managerial position. To then highlight that it is precisely the emergency service area that occupies the largest area of the hospital. "We can only expand into the teaching area, so we will have to analyze how to grow in the future," he said.

The aforementioned hospital in Gran Canaria has a reference population that totals 342,081 people. In this sense, the expansion work is a measure collected within the Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands - established by the Ministry of Health of the regional government- taking into account the large number of registered visits over the past two years.

In addition, in order to meet the health needs of the Island and reduce waiting lists, the Ministry plans to remodel some plants of the Juan Carlos I Hospital in the course of this year in order to install beds for long and medium patients. stay, in addition to operating rooms for ambulatory surgery.
