El Negrn increases the number of beds available in the Home Hospitalization Unit - La Provincia


The University Hospital of Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín, center attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has increased by eight the number of beds available in the Home Hospitalization Unit (HADO) this year 2019 until having a total of 35, which supposes more beds than those of a conventional hospital plant and it turns it into the hospital center of the Canary Islands with greater capacity in this assistance modality.

Last year 2018, a total of 431 patients requiring specialized care were treated, with an average stay of 17 days. The equipment of the Home Hospitalization Unit of the Dr. Negrín Hospital is currently formed by four medical specialists, one in Pneumology and coordinator of the unit, two in Internal Medicine, and another in Family and Emergency Medicine, five nurses, two physiotherapists, a social worker, a caretaker, a driver and a administrative With this extension, a fifth doctor and three nurses are added. On the other hand, the radius of action of the Unit is increased, including the municipalities of Arucas, Guía and Gáldar, as well as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Main pathologies

It is a very useful unit for the management of elderly, chronic and frail patients who would need hospitalization, since the home allows them to better cope with their condition and, among other aspects, enhances their functional autonomy. Generally, the main pathologies that can be treated are, among others, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as respiratory infections such as pneumonia.

Also at present and in a new way, the Domiciliary Hospitalization service, together with the services of Hematology and Hospital Pharmacy, participates in a project that allows to administer chemotherapy pharmacological treatment to patients at home.

This service Home Hospitalization It is oriented, above all, to older patients with the aim of avoiding displacements to the hospital that can suppose an enormous upheaval, so much of personal, familiar or socio-economic nature.
