Greek guard Nick Calathes, 31, will play at Barça until the 2022/23 season, if he passes the medical examination this Friday, after the agreement reached between the Blaugrana club and the player, one of the stars of the current European scene.
Calathes, 31, arrives from Panathinaikos, a team with which he has become one of the best bases in the Euroleague, and where he has played a total of eight seasons.
After the confirmation of this transfer, they will meet again in Barcelona two of the best European bases of recent times. On the track, a Calathes who arrives to be the right arm of Sarunas Jasikevicius, the new Blaugrana coach. The two played together in the PAO for the 2009/10 and 2011/12 seasons.
"Over the years, Calathes has become a first class assistant and a great pick & roll player. In addition, he is a great defender thanks to his reading of the game and intelligence on the court, "said the Blaugrana club.
This 2019/20 course was the best passer in the Euroleague with an average of 9.1 assists per game, in addition to scoring 13.1 points per game. The 2017/18 and 2018/19 academic year was also the maximum assistant with an average of 8 and 8.7, respectively.
Calathes has won a Euroleague, in 2011, 6 Leagues and 4 Greek Cups. With Lokomotiv Kuban, where she played the 2012/13 season, she won the Eurocup. Now he comes to Barça from Nikola Mirotic, Brandon Davies or Cory Higgins in search of a second Euroleague.
Despite having Greek nationality, Calathes was born and trained as a player in the United States. He grew up in Florida and the new Barça player studied and he played at Florida University from 2007 to 2009. That summer, at the age of 20, he received an offer from Panathinaikos and there he began his adventure with the Greek club.
He played in the PAO from 2009 to 2012, in a first three-year period, to later go a year to Lokomotiv (2012-13) and also to the NBA. He played two seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies (2013-15) where he played 138 games. In 2015, however, he returned to Greece and Panathinaikos, where he has played the past five seasons.
