The use of social media has grown more than 3 percent during the first quarter of the year, reaching more than 4,300 million users, a figure that in the case of Spain, it is close to 38 million users, 80 percent of the population.

Every June 30 for eleven years the Day of Social Networks has been celebrated, a date that emerged from the initiative of the founder of the news and technology portal Mashable, Peter Cashmore, with the aim of making these platforms a fundamental tool for everyone can communicate and be informed.

As part of this celebration, the new Digital 2021 report prepared by Hootsuite and We Are Social shows that nearly 50 percent of internet users globally say they use social media to connect with friends and family, and more than 36 percent do so to read the news.

In the first quarter of 2021, there was an increase in users of social networks around the world of more than 3 percent, with more than 4,300 million people already using these platforms (more than 55% of the world population), according to the data in the report. In addition, these users pass a 2 hours and 22 minutes daily average connected to social networks and do so mainly through their mobile phones (99%).

As for the most used social networks, Facebook tops the list, with more than 2.7 billion users. They follow him Youtube (2,291 million), WhatsApp (2,000 million) and Facebook Messenger (1,300 million). But when it comes to which is the favorite social network, users are clear about it; in first place is WhatsApp (24%), followed by Facebook (21.8%), Instagram (18.4%) and Twitter (4.8%).

Globally, men are the ones who show the most interest in Facebook, which is used by 56.3 percent, YouTube by 54.2 percent, LinkedIn by more than 57 percent, and Twitter by almost 64 percent of men. Meanwhile, women are declined by more visual social networks such as Instagram, used by 51.1 percent, Snapchat by more than 56 percent, Pinterest by more than 77 percent, and TikTok by 50.1 percent.

Data in Spain

Regarding Spain, the data from the Hootsuite and We Are Social report indicate that there are currently more than 37 million social media users, which equates to 80 percent of the population.

The users they mostly opt for mobile phones (almost 98%) to connect to social networks, and spend almost two hours a day on them, as reflected in the study.

The platforms most used by Spaniards are WhatsApp (89.5%), YouTube (89.3%) and Facebook (79.2%). It is women who prefer to use social networks such as Facebook (54.5%), YouTube (50.3%), Instagram (53.7%), Snapchat (74.3%) and Pinterest (74.2%). However, it is men who prefer LinkedIn (53.5%) and Twitter (62.8%).
