Earth tremor of Cuba and Jamaica felt in Miami


The strong earthquake that occurred on Tuesday between the islands of Cuba and Jamaica was also felt in Miami, in South Florida (USA), where residents and office workers evacuated several buildings.

The magnitude 7.7 earthquake was recorded 120 kilometers from the northwest corner of Jamaica and 80 kilometers southeast of Cuba at 19.10 GMT at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Both residents and workers of the financial area of ​​Brickell and downtown Miami, as well as commercial areas of Dadeland and Aventura, in the north and south of Miami, respectively, were scared to the streets, in some cases evacuated by order of the authorities .

Eight buildings in the Brickell and downtown areas were evacuated, according to Ken Russell, commissioner of the city of Miami.

The Stephen P. Clark Government Center, which brings together several public offices in Miami-Dade County, was closed "as a precaution," as well as the courts of justice in the same area.

Meanwhile, the Miami-Dade Emergency Operations Center was activated due to the Super Bowl, but is now adding additional agencies to deal with the earthquake and infrastructure in South Florida.

The United States Geological Survey reported that there is no tsumani warning due to the earthquake, but that it is expected to cause waves of up to 90 centimeters (3 feet) in Belize, Cuba, Honduras, Mexico, Cayman Islands and Jamaica.

The US federal agency reported that the quake caused strong tremors in the extreme west of Jamaica and was felt in some small islands in the Caribbean area.
