The director of the Chilean Institute of Public Health (ISP), Alex Figueroa, died in the early hours of the morning suffering from cancer of the liver and who, two weeks ago, had him prostrate in a clinic in Santiago.
Figueroa, who was Minister of Health for President Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle (1994-2000), had been fighting liver cancer for years. His funerals will be held on Thursday, December 27, his family members announced.
"He was with an advanced metastasis until a while ago, he died in the clinic of the Catholic University," said one of the vice presidents of Christian Democracy, Humberto Burotto, a community, to Figueroa,
He added that at the time of his death he was accompanied by his three children, Javiera, Camila and Pablo, and his brothers and friends who had come to visit him.
The Government of President Sebastián Piñera regretted the death of the director of the ISP.
The current Minister of Health, Emilio Santelices, referred to the death of the professional and stressed his "enormous vocation of public service" and sent a message to his family and close. "Rest in peace," according to the website La Tercera.
For his part, the Assistant Secretary of Healthcare Networks, Luis Castillo also joined the words of condolences from the Ministry of Health.
"Dr. Alex Figueroa, former Minister of Health and Intendant (Governor) has left, currently ISP director, but above all, a great friend, of whom I have the best memories when he was president of the students at the Faculty of Medicine of the University Catholic, "Castillo said in his Twitter account.
In the same line, the Mayor of the metropolitan region of Santiago, Karla Rubilar, also referred in a tweet to the death of Figueroa, whom he considered "a beautiful person who leaves a legacy of public service that changed the lives of millions" .
