2021 Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony
Institutional signal – RTVE
The kings, accompanied by the princess Eleanor and the Infanta Sofia, preside this Friday in Oviedo the ceremony of delivery of the Princess of Asturias Awards, which this year distinguish, among others, seven scientists for their role in the record-time development of some of the vaccines against covid.
In addition to the recipients of the Princess of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research, the feminist journalist and writer will receive their diploma Gloria Steinem (Communication and Humanities); the cook, businessman and philanthropist Jose Andres (Concord) or Teresa Perales (Sports).
The list of winners in this XLI edition is completed by the writer and screenwriter Emmanuel Carrère (Lyrics), the Serbian artist Marina Abramovic (Arts), the ngo Campaign for Female Education (International Cooperation) and the economist Amartya sen (Social Sciences), the only winner who will be absent due to medical prescription.
The solemn ceremony will return to its traditional setting of the Campoamor Theater in Oviedo after the pandemic last year forced it to be transferred to the Hotel de la Reconquista to be held without an audience, although with a capacity limited to 60 percent of the 1,313 available seats.
In addition to the traditional king’s speech, Princess Eleanor, who has traveled to Oviedo from the boarding school in Wales, where she has been studying since the end of August, will be heard again, and will thus add her third intervention in the ceremony after debuting in 2019 at the age of 13, the same as his father had in 1981 when, in the same place, he spoke for the first time.
