Damià Calvet and Laura Borràs formalize their candidacies for the Junts primaries to preside over the Generalitat

Damià Calvet and Laura Borràs are already official candidates for the primaries with which the Junts will elect their head of the list and aspiring to preside over the Generalitat in the next elections. The Minister of Territory and the leader of the group in Congress announced this Wednesday, at the deadline to present their candidacies, that they will participate in the race for leadership, as both had previously announced. Both Calvet and Borràs have left the door open to not be heads of the list if finally Carles Puigdemont ends up deciding to occupy that position, an option that is open until midnight this Thursday.

Calvet, head of the Territory portfolio, was the first to announce his candidacy, two days ago, with a video in which he appeared on the tracks trains that appeared on the 1-O billboard. This Wednesday he confirmed his registration as a candidate through a message on his Twitter account in which he included the screenshot with his file as a candidate. In his case, the minister has a management profile that is well valued among moderate sectors and the business world, despite the fact that Calvet did not hesitate to take the step towards Junts following Puigdemont when he broke the PDeCAT card. He is also considered the successor of the imprisoned ex-minister Josep Rull, with whom he was also a close collaborator.

The second candidate in the running is Laura Borràs, a former Minister of Culture who now serves as a spokesperson for Junts in Congress. The deputy is, a priori, one of the people who start as favorites in this race thanks to the support she reaps between the bases of her training and some electoral results as head of the list to the generals that improved the expectations with which Junts started per Catalunya, especially in the generals of November 2019.

Borràs is awaiting trial in the Supreme Court, to which she arrives as a registered judge, for an alleged case of corruption that she committed when she ran the Institució de les Lletres Catalanes between 2013 and 2017. The Prosecutor's Office believes that the current deputy divided contracts to adjudicate them to a friend, for which he considers that he may have committed crimes of prevarication, fraud to the Administration, embezzlement and documentary falsification. The deputy, who was pending trial after Congress accepted the court's request, has always assured that she suffers political persecution.

Together with the two previous candidates, the only ones who at the moment have taken the step of presenting themselves, in the formation of Junts they are waiting for new runners to arrive throughout the day to the race for the primaries, which will be decided in a voting by all of the nearly 5,000 party members between November 28 and 29. Among the names that had sounded like possible candidates are that of two councilors: Jordi Puignerò, of Digital Policies, who is considered close and well considered by Carles Puigdemont, and that of Company, Ramon Tremosa, a politician who has gained internal ascendancy since his arrived at the Ministry a little over two months ago.
