Costa Rica announces the largest hospital investment in 50 years



The Government of Costa Rica signed on Monday the contract for the construction of a hospital in the province of Puntarenas (Central Pacific) valued at 225 million dollars and is considered the largest hospital investment in the country in the last 50 years.

The hospital, of 73,132 square meters of construction, will be a set of 10 buildings of 5 levels each, will have 350 beds for internment, 12 operating rooms, four delivery rooms, 64 offices, and chemotherapy, cardiology, hemodynamics, optometry services , intensive care, oncology, among others.

The construction contract was signed by the state-owned Caja Costarricense del Seguro Social (CCSS), which manages the country's public health centers, and the Van Der Laat and Jiménez / INGELECTRA Consortium.

The contract stipulates that the hospital will be operational by the end of 2022.

The work will be financed with 170 million dollars of a loan from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and CCSS funds.

“This work is an achievement of great impact for the country. This is the most ambitious project that CCSS will undertake in the last decades, the investment is substantial and the provision of its services will be of global echo because it is located in a highly tourist area, ”commented the CCSS Infrastructure and Technologies Manager , the architect Gabriela Murillo.

According to the Government, this hospital will directly benefit 315,000 people in the province of Puntarenas, and it will also be the most modern in the country and totally digital.

The president of the country, Carlos Alvarado, who attended Puntarenas on Monday as a witness to the signing of the construction contract, stressed that investing in the CCSS is "investing in people" and that the Government "has an obligation to maintain priority attention about this vital work. "

According to the Government, this is the largest hospital investment in the country in the last 50 years since the construction of the Hospital Mexico, in the capital San José.
