Coronavirus in the Canary Islands: the Canary Islands will receive 15.5 million euros for groups in vulnerable situations – La Provincia


Canary Islands will receive a total of 15,363,602 euros to finance aid and social funds to face the current global health crisis, as part of the commitment of the Government of Spain to meet the needs of the most vulnerable caused by the coronavirus COVID-19 and for the consequent measures adopted to face the pandemic.

The Minister council has approved this Tuesday through separate Agreements the formalization of the distribution criteria and the resulting distribution of two social funds agreed in the Territorial Council of Social Services and the System for Autonomy and Care for Dependency, focused on attending to the basic benefits of social services and guaranteeing infant feeding before the closing of schools.

Of those about 15.5 million euros destined for the Canary Islands, 14,087,602 euros correspond to credits to finance the basic benefits of social services of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands and local Canarian corporations, whose purpose is exclusively to face extraordinary situations arising from COVID-19.

The rest 1,276,000 euros correspond to loans to finance aid to guarantee the basic right to food for boys and girls in a vulnerable situation who are affected by the closure of educational centers in the face of the health emergency due to the COVID-19 coronavirus.

Aid for feeding children in vulnerable situations

Aid for infant feeding, which se will continue as long as schools and institutes are closed and that comprise the distribution throughout Spain of 25 million euros, they will be destined for girls and boys who received a dining grant in their educational centers and who, before their closure, are devoid of this essential food.

Aid may consist of direct economic transfers or the direct provision of food distribution and families with students from Early Childhood to Secondary School, to whom the autonomous communities or the municipal social services have awarded scholarships or grants for the school canteen during this academic year, will be beneficiaries.

Extraordinary Social Fund against COVID-19

This extraordinary fund distributes among the different State territories the 300 million euros contemplated in Royal Decree-Law 8/2020, of March 17, on extraordinary urgent measures to face the economic and social impact of COVID-19, thanks to the authorization by the Ministry of Finance of the application of the Contingency Fund and the granting of a credit supplement to the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2020.

The resources of this fund can only be used to face situations derived from COVID-19 and are intended to reinforce social policies and care for families, especially those in situations of greatest vulnerability in the different autonomous communities, specifically, older people , dependents, homeless people or single-parent families, among other groups.

The Extraordinary Social Fund, whose distribution responds to objective distribution criteria based on the number of inhabitants, dispersion of the population in the territory and the aging population, will finance projects and labor contracts necessary for the development of benefits such as:

  • Strengthen proximity services at home.
  • Increase and reinforce the operation of home telecare devices.
  • When necessary, transfer rehabilitation services to the home environment.
  • Strengthen care devices for homeless people.
  • Acquire means of prevention.
  • Expand the templates of social service centers or residential centers.
