Coronavirus in the Canary Islands: Pozo Izquierdo runs out of windsurfing world championship – La Provincia

The Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA) Gran Canaria World Windsurfing Championship is postponed until 2021 by the Covid-19. The Morenotwins Sports Club, the organizer of the event, made this drastic decision as he could not guarantee the safety of the athletes, PWA judges, workers and fans of windsurfing in general, who were going to meet, from July 3 to 12, in the Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival 2020.

For the first time in its 32-year history, the Gran Canaria Windsurfing World Cup is not going to take place, due to the uncertain scenario caused by the global pandemic, stressed the president of the Morenotwins Sports Club, Daida Ruano. “The organization of an international event of this magnitude, in which the best athletes of the professional windsurfing circuit and journalists from all over the world meet, requires compliance with a series of health and logistics protocols that have not yet been defined by government authorities, less than a month and a half from the hypothetical start of action in the water, “said Ruano, who pointed out that” postponing the championship is an exercise in social responsibility. “

The difficult decision to postpone the Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival was made after analyzing the many factors involved in this equation, added the vice president of the Morenotwins Sports Club, Iballa Ruano, who indicated that “the lack of knowledge of the exact date on which the airspace makes it impossible to guarantee that not only European riders, but also those who must travel from Australia, Japan, the United States or Brazil, can compete. “

The conditions, key point

Unlike other events on the sports calendar in the Canary Islands, which have postponed the original dates to try to celebrate them from October, an event such as the Gran Canaria windsurfing world championship requires excellent wind and wave conditions for nine days. The months of July and August are the only time of the year in which the trade winds and the tides guarantee that these two phenomena of nature meet in Pozo Izquierdo, with sufficient strength and constancy to be able to organize a test of world class. For this reason, postponing the championship and trying to find alternative dates was not feasible.

As every year, the PWA Wave World Tour was scheduled to start in Gran Canaria, however, the impossibility of holding the Pozo Izquierdo event transforms the rest of the windsurfing season into a real mystery. The last test that has confirmed its cancellation is the Sylt World Cup in Germany.
