Copa del Rey. Unicaja or the triumph of the “Spain Brand”

The host has a nucleus of national players that will be decisive in the next “Window” of the selection and that was already key in the quarterfinal victory

Monday starts the concentration of the Spanish team for the “Windows” qualifying for Eurobasket 2021 and in Guadalajara will be the four main responsible for the Unicaja pass to the semifinals of the Copa del Rey. Alberto Díaz, Jaime Fernández, Darío Brizuela and Rubén Guerrero will be placed under Scariolo for the meetings against Romania and Poland after being decisive in the comeback of Unicaja against Iberostar Tenerife.

Unicaja is trying to follow the recipe of Real Madrid de Laso: a nucleus of national players who remain as much as possible in the team (Díaz, Fernández and Brizuela together with Carlos Suárez would form that group) and the inclusion of capable youth players (Rubén Guerrero) to make the leap to the first team so that Malaga fans feel identified with the team. With the quintet formed by Díaz-Fernández-Brizuela-Suárez-Guerrero, Unicaja was able to turn the game against Tenerife in the third quarter. The last to arrive, former student Darío Brizuela, was the first to step forward. Another former collegiate, Jaime Fernández, and the base Alberto Díaz finished revolutionizing the game.

The center Rubén Guerrero (2.13 and 24 years old) is the player with the widest margin for improvement. He was summoned for the first time for the selection in summer 2017. He played two international matches and after being four years in the American University League (NCAA) he returned to Malaga. He ends his contract in June 2021 and by its conditions it can become a very appealing piece for the greats.

Unicaja is looking today against MoraBanc Andorra for its first final since 2009 and ending the curse of the host dating back to 2002 when Baskonia lifted the title in Vitoria. Andorrans are rookies at this point in the competition. They gave the surprise by eliminating Casademont Zaragoza and it will be the second semifinal of a great tournament in two years, since last season they played the semifinal of the Eurocup. “We have to recover the team physically and have a mentality like the one we had in the rooms. The important thing is the head because it is always ahead, ”said Luis Casimiro, a malaguista coach.
