The United States is, by far, the country outside the European Union that imports a larger volume of olive oil from Spain, almost three times more than the next on the list, that is, Japan. Thus, between October 2018 and July 2019, the US citizens acquired approximately 105,000 tons of the product derived from olives. This amount was similar to that of the previous two years, in which 96,000 tons were imported in the case of the same period in 2017/2018 and 108,000, in 2016/2017, according to Eurostat data. Within the countries of the European Union, Italy is the state to which more bottles of olive oil from Spanish fields are going to stop, with around 281,000 tons in the 2017/2018 season.

The United States has threatened the imposition of tariffs on various products from the European Union and Spain would be one of the countries most affected by the decision.

The threat of Donald Trump could be effective this week but there is a possibility that an agreement will be reached at the EU and United States trade meeting. If there is no progress at the Geneva meeting from the next day October 18 the new tariffs would apply.
