Colombian runner Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) will not take this Tuesday the departure of Italy spin, after testing positive for coronavirus in the test he underwent during the rest day on Monday.
“Gaviria was isolated immediately and feels well and completely asymptomatic”, reported his team. The rest of the corridors and Emirates staff tested negative, although today they will undergo further tests.
It is the second time that the Colombian tests positive for coronavirus. He already did it in March during the tour of the United Arab Emirates, which was the first cycle race affected by the pandemic.
So far, four riders have been removed from the Giro due to their test results: before Gaviria, Britain’s Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott), Dutchman Steven Kruijswijk (Jumbo-Visma) and Australian Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb) . The Mitchelton-Scott and Jumbo-Visma teams left the test.
