Nearly 400 Chinese importers, investors and tourism agencies confirmed their participation in the Colombia-China Economic and Commercial Forum, which the Government of the South American country will hold in Beijing and Shanghai on July 30 and 31, official sources reported Sunday.
The meeting is part of the state visit that began on Sunday the Colombian president, Iván Duque, who will lead the promotional activities with the ministers of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism, Juan Manuel Restrepo; Transportation, Ángela María Orozco, and Agriculture, Andrés Valencia, as well as the chancellor, Carlos Holmes Trujillo, and the president of ProColombia, Flavia Santoro.
"We are aiming to capitalize on new opportunities that allow increasing Colombian exports to a key market such as China, which has 11% of world imports per year and products that Colombia can offer as food and clothing," Santoro said in a release.
ProColombia has identified specific opportunities for the export of flowers, processed and exotic fruits, pork, coffee, sashes, bathing suits and natural cosmetics, among other products.
Santoro said that the intention of the trip is also "to attract more tourists and investors", since China invests about 124,000 million dollars a year in the world and the businessmen of that country have expressed "great interest in Colombia, especially in sectors such as infrastructure, energy and telecommunications. "
China has a population that exceeds 1.3 billion inhabitants and a government with the aim of reaffirming its position as a world power by balancing its trade balances with more imports.
To this is added the growing purchasing power of the Chinese population and its solid middle class.
In 2018, Colombian non-mining energy exports to China totaled 260.7 million dollars, 18.4% more than in 2017, according to figures from the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE).
As of May 2019, the non-mining-energy segment totaled $ 36.2 million.
According to the Bank of the Republic of Colombia, during 2018 the flows of foreign direct investment from China to the country were 32.2 million dollars, which represents 0.3% more than in 2017.
Also, during 2018 Colombia received 15,656 travelers residing in China, which generated a positive variation of 8% compared to the immediately previous year.
Duke is today Sunday in Shanghai, where he will remain until Tuesday, the day he will travel to Beijing.
"We are very happy to start this visit to China. We come to open a market for Colombian exports: we want to open the meat market and increase imports (in China) of Hass coffee, bananas, avocado …", The president said in statements to journalists.
