The mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, said today that she was "very worried" because pro-independence leaders in prison have started a hunger strike in Catalonia and offered "institutionally" for the consistory to appear in any instance to denounce "violation of rights fundamentals ".
Colau has made these statements at the end of a few days of the Democratic Party in Burlington (USA), after Catalan separatist leaders like Jordi Sànchez and Jordi Turull began an indefinite hunger strike in protest against the "blockade" of the Constitutional Court to their resources of preventive detention, which prevents them from going to the European Court of Human Rights.
"There is a dangerous loss of prestige of the judicial institutions in Spain," said Colau, who sees "concern that political and social leaders are in preventive detention, a situation against which" almost all Catalonia, Amnesty International, courts European and more and more jurists throughout the State. "
"It is a situation of exceptionality that is prolonged incomprehensibly and unjustifiably," added Colau, who fears for the health of the independence prisoners.
As he has already said on other occasions, he reiterated that this situation shows that "a reform of the Justice in Spain is needed", and he has asked the President of the Government, Pedro Sanchez, to attack it already, especially because "the high courts they are politicized "and" do not respect fundamental rights ".
"They are making an abusive use of legality and violate fundamental rights, because right now the Constitutional is dilating a lot the response to the legitimate resources that have presented the defenses, and when normally answered in 30 days, they have been unemployed for more than a year" , the mayor has argued.
In this context, Colau has said: "If by legal strategy it can be positive that the City Council institutionally can move this complaint of violation of fundamental rights before any instance, we are willing to do it."
In parallel, Colau has spread the following tweet: "All the support for the complaint made by political prisoners: blocking resources to prevent the action of the European courts is an inadmissible abuse." A TC that acts in this way is endangering the rights of all citizens ".
