The mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, today called for the independence parties to support Pedro Sanchez's budget, because not doing so, he said, will not help the imprisoned politicians and may lead all of Spain to the same situation that Andalusia has now.
Speaking to Catalunya Radio, Colau said that he believes that "the alternative is much worse" and that all together have to do what is best, in his case "for Barcelona", but also "for Catalonia", for what he considers that the budgets have to be negotiated.
Colau yesterday visited the seven pro-independence politicians imprisoned in the prison of Lledoners to speak with them before their transfer to Madrid and announce that at the next municipal plenary session they will present an institutional declaration of rejection of their situation.
Colau believes that the Barcelona City Council can act as a "speaker" in Europe for this democratic position to denounce the violation of fundamental rights.
In addition, she has been willing to hold an electoral debate inside the prison, if during the electoral campaign, Joaquim Forn finally decides to run for mayor and is prevented from leaving to participate in the electoral contest.
