The mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, has asked the European Union and all administrations to "do more" to fight against climate change.
Colau has made this request in response to the letter from Eurocomisario de Medio Ambiente, Karmenu Vella, asking Spain for additional measures on air quality to mitigate the levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) that, in cities such as Madrid or the metropolitan area of Barcelona, violate the limits established by European regulations.
"Everyone has to do more, also the European Union, all administrations," said the mayor, who has said that cities must "make an effort" because they are the main generators of pollution.
Although to achieve this goal, Colau believes that the EU and state governments should legislate and help cities.
In the letter sent to the Minister for the Ecological Transition in functions, Teresa Ribera, the Eurocomisario indicates that it is necessary to adopt additional measures to face the obligations in terms of air quality and achieve compliance with the limit values for the year 2020 .
At the press conference after the constitution of the Climate Emergency Bureau created to elaborate the measures that will include the declaration of Climate Emergency in Barcelona scheduled for January 1, 2020, Ada Colau has lamented that the new government of the Madrid City Council has "restrained and plans to back down" the measures taken in the last mandate and that were decisive for the EU not to sanction Spain.
"Barcelona is not going to stop, not to avoid fines, but to make life possible," said Colau, who has asked the Government of Pedro Sanchez to also take measures, among which has indicated the pending investments in public transport.
