The centenary of the publication of the text for theater Santa Juana de Castilla of Benito Pérez Galdós encourages two days that include a film screening, a round table and a dramatization within the framework of Biennium Galdosiano, program with which the Cabildo of Gran Canaria It commemorates the 175th anniversary of the birth of the immortal author, as well as the 100th anniversary of his death, in 2020.
On Tuesday, October 30, the Pérez Galdós House-Museum will show the movie The split crown (2016), a drama directed by Jordi Frades set in the early sixteenth century and in which the times of uncertainty that are experienced after the death of Isabel the Catholic in 1504 because of the power struggles between Fernando the Catholic Y Felipe el Hermoso and whose main victim was Juana la Loca, daughter of Isabel and legitimate heir to the throne of Castile.
The movie stars Rodolfo Sancho, Irene Escolar, Eusebio Poncela, Fernando Guillén Cuervo Y José Coronado. The pass, with free admission until full capacity, will take place at 7:00 p.m., and will be preceded by an introduction in charge of Yolanda Arencibia, director of the Galdos Chair of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC).
Already on Wednesday, October 31, also from 7:00 pm, a debate will take place in which they will participate Carmen Menéndez Onrubia, researcher of Higher Center for Scientific Research (CSIC) and specialist in theater, and the also expert in the theater world and professor of the ULPGC Carmen Márquez Montes.
Both will bring the audience to the past, present and future of the dramatization of the Galdós plays in a meeting that will also take place in the house-museum of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria.
Carmen Méndendez will outline a vital and artistic panorama of Margarita Xirgu, actress who premiered in 1918 the representation of Saint Joan of Castile, He also focused on his relationship with Galdós and on the two premieres he made of his works, including the version of Marianela, adapted to the scene by the Álvarez Quintero brothers.
Márquez, on the other hand, will review how the daughter of the Catholic Monarchs, the most powerful woman in the West at that time and who was branded as crazy until a few decades ago, is presented by Galdós as a saint, a devout woman and aware of her responsibility.
After the round table, at 8:00 p.m., the company of University Theater of Las Palmas directed by Nacho Cabrera will perform a theatrical performance of different scenes of Santa Juana de Castilla, with the participation of a cast of actresses and actors formed by Verónica María Reyes Rueda, Ángel García Sevilla, Griselda Ponce Loscalzo, Yanira Cámara Suárez, Carla Alonso Roberto, Saavedra Daniel Molina Y Alfonso Salim Hanna.
These two days contribute to give body to the commitment acquired by the Cabildo to pay tribute to the most international of the Canaries.
