Christmas is here! And no, it is not the mayor of Vigo who this time brings Christmas in the middle of the summer heatwave. As is traditional, it comes from the hand of Loterías y Apuestas del Estado, which this Wednesday presented the tenth of the Gordo, also announcing that it is now available at all points of sale in the commercial Lottery network. And it is that according to lottery players, summer is their 'particular August' in the sale of Christmas lottery tickets, especially thanks to tourists who, when they arrive at their vacation destinations, ask themselves 'What if it's here?' , which continues to be the motto of the summer campaign.

One more year, Loterías pays homage to our cultural heritage for which it has chosen the work of the Prado, 'The Virgin with the Child in Glory' by Carlo Maratti. That canvas is the one chosen to illustrate the tenth of the Christmas Lottery this year. It is an oil painting around 1680 by the Italian artist in which the Virgin Mary is seated on a throne of clouds resting on a crescent moon and holding the Child Jesus in her arms.

The president of Loterías, Jesús Huerta, has highlighted that “one of the greatest challenges for the future that we have, as a public company, is to preserve and protect this tradition. It is important, on the one hand, not to lose the connection with the values of Spanish society, which have accompanied us, unchanged, for more than two centuries. And, on the other hand, we also have to evolve as a company at the service of citizens.”

Likewise, it has presented the already traditional summer campaign that this year, through a warm and friendly tone of humor, emphasizes the idea that even those who think they know everything, do not know where the Christmas Gordo will fall.

180 million tenths

For the draw on December 22, 180 million Christmas Lottery tickets have been put up for sale. This time the issue amounts to 180 series (eight more than the previous year) of 100,000 issues each, and reaches 3,600 million euros, of which 70% will be distributed in prizes. In other words, the Christmas Draw will distribute 2,520 million euros in prizes this year.

Among these prizes, the popular Christmas Gordo stands out, of 4,000,000 euros for the series; the second prize, of 1,250,000 euros for the series; or the third, of 500,000 euros to the series. The amount of the tenth remains 20 euros.

Huerta has recalled that Lotteries continues to maintain the social purpose with which it was founded in 1763, to "help hospitals, hospices and other works." And that at the present time translates into the help it provides to more than a million vulnerable people each year, through its collaboration with organizations such as the Red Cross, Cáritas and the Spanish Association Against Cancer, among others.
