Chile waits for Trump for an APEC looking sideways at the trade war

The Chilean Government hopes that the president of the United States, Donald Trump, will be the head of the US delegation at the APEC summit that will be held next November in the South American country, on which he will plan the shadow of the commercial war between China and the American power

The Undersecretary of International Economic Relations of Chile, Rodrigo Yáñez, said Thursday in a meeting with foreign correspondents that he would like the 21 leaders of the countries that make up the APEC forum for trade and cooperation between Asia and Pacific to attend the appointment, and expressed his desire that Trump play a relevant role in this part of the world.

"We want the United States to play a relevant role in Asia Pacific and of course Trump's presence in Santiago is an important part of it, but the APEC agenda has to move forward and we will work with the head of the US delegation. UU., Waiting for him to be the president of the USA, "said Yanez.

The high Chilean official commented that Trump has not yet pronounced on whether or not he will attend the event, for which nine APEC space leaders have already confirmed their presence, including the presidents of China, Xi Jinping; and Russia, Vladimir Putin.

In addition, the president of Peru, Martín Vizcarra, has confirmed his attendance; as well as the prime ministers of Australia, Scott Morrison; New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern; Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong; Thailand, Prayut Chan-Ochoa; Vietnam, Nguyen Xuan Phúc and the chief executive of Hong Kong, Carrie Lam.

"We would like the 21 leaders, including the US leader, that is our expectation, but whether or not it is not remove that we have equal goals and objectives to reach a consensus among the economies," he said. Yanez

Asked about the trade war between China and the US, the Chilean undersecretary said that it is an issue that is outside a forum of the characteristics of APEC, which does not deal with political discussions, but which has happened in other instances, such as the G20, there may be bilateral meetings between the two countries to discuss this issue.

At the same time, he highlighted the role of the president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, in seeking to articulate solutions to conflicts between countries, such as the commercial war, "beyond which the APEC forum does not have that objective."

"APEC is a forum capable of delivering important results and in this context of commercial warfare, countries that are not part of that conflict must continue to promote the trade integration agenda," said Yáñez.

"That is why it is important that the other leaders are there because the rest of the economies are tremendously relevant and (the APEC) is not exhausted in the presence of two countries," he added.

Yáñez commented that Chile's bet is that there be free and open trade in the APEC area and stressed that since the country is part of this forum (entered in 1994) its exports have grown by 800%.

The 2019 edition of APEC will commemorate the 30 years of creation of this forum and the priorities proposed by Chile as host country are digital society; 4.0 integration; women, SMEs and inclusive growth; and sustainable growth.
