Chile exceeds 5,000 COVID-19 infections and adds 43 deaths



The Chilean health authorities reported this Tuesday 301 new cases of coronavirus in the country in the last 24 hours, a figure that increases the infections to 5,116, and indicated that the deceased amount to 43, after confirming six new deaths from COVID-19 in the country.

The Minister of Health, Jaime Mañalich, reported that five of the six who died on the last day were over the age of 70, and three of them resided in the Metropolitan Region, which houses the capital, and in which are 46 % of those infected by SARS-CoV2.

Despite overcoming the barrier of 5,000 cases, which keeps Chile as the second country with the most infections in Latin America after Brazil, Mañalich remained confident: "We have a number of people infected with a progression that progresses by 300 and 400 per day , and in the last few days it has been declining. "

He also reported that the number of recovered amounts to 898, a figure that corresponds to patients who are discharged after 14 days of admission without necessarily performing an exit test and who are considered "non-contagious".

On this occasion, the ministerial part began with a tribute on World Health Day to the 286 health workers who have been infected with coronavirus in the country, 256 of them public sector officials and three of them admitted in a state of gravity.

"What they are doing for all of us is heroic, it will be remembered. All health workers deserve our recognition and gratitude," said Mañalich, after which he invited Chileans to participate in a collective applause this Tuesday for the night at 9:00 p.m.

Chile is under the state of exception due to catastrophe, with a national curfew from 10:00 pm local time until 5:00 am local time the next day, with classes suspended until May and with borders, shopping malls, cinemas, restaurants and shops that are not basic necessities closed.

The Government has ruled out decreeing the mandatory quarantine throughout the territory, as other neighboring countries have done with fewer cases such as Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia and Peru, and is currently leaning towards a "progressive quarantine", which depends on the evolution of the infections

To date, the measure of confinement governed in six communes of Santiago, but due to favorable epidemiological data, the regulation is intended to be lifted next Monday in three of them and partially in two.

On the contrary, the compulsory quarantine is maintained in various areas such as the La Araucanía region, where confinement has been decreed in a third commune, and in various municipalities such as Chillán, Osorno or Temuco, affecting almost two million people in a population. total of 18.
