The Chilean authorities reported this Tuesday that 176 new cases of COVID-19 were registered in the last 24 hours, which brings the total number up to 922, and that they are considering decreeing a quarantine in the east of the capital, where the most infections.
“In the metropolitan region we have a decrease in new cases in the eastern sector, however, it is the place where the greatest number of cases in the country is concentrated and it is the place from where the infection can spread,” explained the Chilean minister of Cheers, Jaime Mañalich.
Of the new cases, 81 are in the affluent neighborhoods of Providencia, Las Condes, Vitacura and Lo Barnechea, in the east of the city, and in total there are about 40 people hospitalized, two of them in “serious” condition, he indicated. Mañalich.
“Every day we are evaluating measures. I do not rule out that in the next few hours or days stricter measures will be taken with respect to these four communes in the eastern sector of the capital,” added the minister.
The country, which registered its first case of COVID-19 on March 3 and already has two deaths, is under a state of emergency due to catastrophe, with classes suspended and borders, shopping malls, cinemas, restaurants and shops that are not basic necessities closed.
Although there is very little activity on the streets, the Government has only decreed preventive confinement for those over 80, but more and more voices are asking to extend it to the entire population, including the Medical College and fifty hundred mayors from the whole country.
Neighboring countries with fewer cases, such as Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia and Peru, have already spent several days with the population confined to their homes.
The Government did enact a curfew from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the next day throughout the country, although this Tuesday it was announced at 2:00 p.m. on the remote Easter Island, where there is already an infected person.
The minister also announced on Tuesday that a maximum value for the COVID-19 test was set in private health care of 25,000 Chilean pesos (about $ 30) and a new sanitary cord in the northern town of San Pedro de la Paz, which joins the already imposed in the central city of Chillán.
The southern city of Puerto William and Caleta Tortel, a small town in Chilean Patagonia, have also been in quarantine for a few days, where an infected tourist who was traveling on a cruise ship walked.
“The evolution of the pandemic (in the world) continues to be very serious,” said Mañalich.
