Catalunya will allow discotheques to reopen with 50% capacity and without dance floors

Nightlife will return to Catalonia from this Wednesday, but it will, for the moment, with important restrictions. The Generalitat has approved this Tuesday that nightclubs and music bars can reopen their doors to the public until 3 in the morning to hold concerts and live performances. This has been adopted at the meeting that directs the civil protection plan that establishes the measures against the pandemic.

According to the first details, advanced by TV3, the establishments may obtain permission to open, but they must comply with a series of restrictions, such as disabling the dance floor. The maximum capacity will be 50% and the public must wear a mask at all times, except when consuming drinks or food. In addition, live performances must be hosted, which attendees will follow from fixed locations with seats and tables.

Discos and nightlife venues have been closed in Catalonia since the start of the pandemic, with some exceptions made for some restaurants that could remain open after midnight. Since the de-escalation after confinement last June, the sector has been on the warpath against the restrictions imposed by the Generalitat, which some employers have come to challenge in court, without success.

The employers’ association of the nightlife sector Fecalon has celebrated the step taken by the Generalitat, although it continues to consider it insufficient to guarantee the economic viability of the sector. “Although it is a small gap that will allow smaller establishments, of a family nature and those with live programming to be able to open to cover the expenses of the establishments, it does not solve the problem of keeping the vast majority of activities closed” , has assured one of the most representative employers’ federations.
