Castells creates a debate table on gender equality at the University

The Minister of Universities, Manuel Castells, has chaired this Wednesday the constitution of a debate table on equality to reflect on the gender policies that his department implements and develops.

Castells seeks to incorporate the gender perspective in the regulations promoted by Universities so that they revert to the elimination of existing gender inequalities in the university context.

This working group will be made up of experts in the field, representatives of the Ministries of Universities, Equality and Science and Innovation, members of Aneca, CRUE Equality and the State Association of Women Researchers and Technologists.

From time to time, when the table itself considers it necessary, other experts will be invited “to further enrich the current composition” of it, the Castells department explained in a note.

In the first meeting, the equality objectives of the Ministry itself were discussed and the operation of the evaluation of the transfer six-year period was analyzed.

The two norms with the greatest impact within the university system, included in the coalition government program, that will incorporate this perspective are the Statute for teaching and research staff and the new Law on Universities.

These regulations aim to incorporate parity in the selection and evaluation commissions and bodies, correct the existing wage inequality in universities, facilitate reconciliation and uses of time compatible with personal life, strengthen the application of protocols against harassment. sexual, and guarantee the equitable mobility of men and women in the university, among others.

In addition, you want to incorporate the principle of equality in university education.

“It is essential to advance in modifying the academic culture so that it does not revert to greater inequality between women and men” since the production and transmission of knowledge “is not a neutral task” and it is necessary to detect when it is reproducing gender inequalities and what Changes must be made so that this does not occur.

All this will be incorporated in the drafting of the norms that affect the organization of teachings, and work will be done on specific materials and workshops that serve as a guide to carry out this cultural change.

Likewise, specific actions that are urgently required to influence the advancement of gender equality will be promoted.
