The leader of the PP, Pablo Casado, advanced the decision of the Central Electoral Board (JEC) to disable Oriol Junqueras as a MEP, adopted on January 3, one hour before the electoral body formally communicated it to the Popular Party.
This follows from an agreement of the Board of February 26, issued in response to the consultation of a citizen who asked about the circumstances of this advance of Casado.
The consultation was addressed to the Information and Transparency Unit of the Ministry of Interior, which in turn has been transferred to the JEC.
The leader of the PP, on January 3, advanced the disqualification through a tweet published in his account after 19.30 hours, almost half an hour before the end of the meeting of the Board, at 20.00 hours, and one hour before will formally communicate it, by email, to the PP.
This is what is stated in the aforementioned agreement, already visible on the agency’s website and advanced on Thursday by eldiario.es.
The president of the JEC has also decided to open an investigation to determine whether Casado received a leak, as requested by Más País, the formation of Íñigo Errejón.
The sequence is as follows. On January 3, the Electoral Board agrees that Junqueras will not be MEP in application of the “ensuing disqualification”, since, although he attended the European elections in May 2019, when he was not convicted, it was later, in October , for crimes of sedition and embezzlement.
On January 4, the investiture debate of Pedro Sánchez as President of the Government took place, in which the vote in favor or the abstention of ERC were decisive.
In this climate, the leader of the PP tweeted after 7.30 pm on January 3: “Another resource of the PP to the Central Electoral Board ensures that Junqueras is not MEP, and therefore remains in jail without traveling to Brussels, as he intended Government report of (Pedro) Sánchez “.
The JEC recalls that the session during which it was decided “the loss of the status of deputy of the European Parliament” of Junqueras ended at 8 pm.
Then, and in order to “streamline their knowledge for those affected”, the Board sent by email “a copy of the reference agreement and the particular vote formulated” to the applicants for the declaration (PP, Cs and Vox), to the affected (Junqueras) and to the press department of the Congress of Deputies, “through which the Central Electoral Board channels relations with the media.”
The hours were as follows: at 8:37 p.m. said documentation was sent to the general representative of the PP before the Board, at 8:38 p.m. to that of Citizens, at 8:39 p.m. to Vox, at 8:40 p.m. to the representative of Junqueras, at 20.47 to “liaison emails with the European Parliament” and at 21.04 to the press office of the Congress.
