The Canary Islands is the fifth Spanish autonomous community in which there have been fewer deaths from the virus in seven days. This is reflected in the latest report published last Friday by the Ministry of Health in which 17 deaths are reported between February 19 and 26 in the Islands, which are located behind Cantabria, where six deaths were registered in the same time frame; from La Rioja and Navarra (7 each in each) and from the Balearic Islands (10). However, the Archipelago added another four deaths over the weekend, three of them last day, according to data provided by the Ministry of Health. To date, 589 Covid-19-related deaths have occurred in the region.
Likewise, the health area reported yesterday on the detection of 140 new cases of Covid-19 in the Islands and, with them, the general count rises to 40,725 since the start of the pandemic. In the Archipelago there are 5,739 people infected with SARS-CoV-2, this is the lowest figure since December 22 of last year, when there were 5,646. Of those currently affected, 360 are admitted due to complications caused by the virus: 88 remain in intensive care units (ucis) and 277 are in the hospital ward. The rest are recovered in their homes. In contrast, 34,397 citizens have overcome the disease in the region since the start of the coronavirus crisis. Of them, 44 received medical discharge in the last 24 hours.
On the other hand, 56 of the infections detected in the last day were located in Tenerife where the accumulated figure rises to 17,027. On the island, there are still 2,353 active cases, that is, 41% of the total that is concentrated in the autonomous community. A 9% more registered Gran Canaria, where there are 2,871 infected people of the 16,689 who have contracted the virus since the start of the pandemic -65 more than the previous day-. This makes it, for the moment, the island with the greatest active presence of Covid-19.
Lanzarote added eight positive diagnoses in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of the island to 4,431 since the health crisis began. Of these, 253 are still epidemiologically active. Fuerteventura, for its part, accumulates 1,673 positive cases when registering another nine the previous day. There, 208 citizens continue to be affected by the pathogen.
La Palma added two infections that put the number of accumulated at 402 and the number of assets at 26. El Hierro, however, did not count any more cases of coronavirus, so its general count remains at 290, although on the island There are 23 people infected -according to Health, these data are being purified, which is why they are not collected in this way in the statistical register, which will be updated in the coming days-. La Gomera also did not register new positive diagnoses, bringing its total to 213 since the virus arrived in the region. Until last day, five paintings remained in progress on the island.
