The public hospitals of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) This Wednesday they celebrate a series of activities with which the World Hand Hygiene Day, that is commemorated every May 5. For this, the Dr. Negrín and Insular-Materno Infantil university hospitals, in Gran Canaria; Our Lady of Candelaria and the HUC, in Tenerife; General of Fuerteventura; Doctor Molina Orosa e Insular, in Lanzarote; General of La Palma; Our Lady of Guadalupe, in La Gomera, and Our Lady of the Kings, in El Hierro, will carry out a series of activities to highlight the importance of hand hygiene and thus join the motto of the World Health Organization (WHO) Seconds that save. This day is celebrated to remember the importance of hand washing, a simple prevention practice, as well as an effective and cheap tool to fight against preventable complications.

Healthcare-related infections are commonly caused by the transmission of microorganisms when healthcare personnel touch the patient with their hands without performing the simple technique of hand hygiene. It is estimated that at least 7 out of 100 hospitalized patients could contract a healthcare-related infection. Among critically ill and most vulnerable patients in intensive care units this figure can reach 30 percent.

  • The University Hospital of Gran Canaria Dr Negrín It will install an information table in the entrance hall with posters, leaflets and guides on hand hygiene and it will project different videos in which hand washing techniques are explained.

  • In the Insular-Maternal-Infant University Hospital Complex, its Clinical Committee on Hand Hygiene has reinforced the messages in the hospital center for the fulfillment of hand hygiene, and hydroalcoholic solutions have been distributed for the services and units, as well as in the hand hygiene stations. Training plans have also been drawn up for the centre’s professionals.

Preventive Medicine specialists remember that proper hand hygiene is a fundamental measure to avoid the transmission of microorganisms. Performing proper hand hygiene, which has become widely known due to the pandemic, should be a common hygienic practice from now on given its important preventive role against multiple diseases.

  • The Our Lady of Candelaria University Hospital has opened the registration period for the I Multidisciplinary Conference on Hand Hygiene, which will take place tomorrow, Wednesday and is aimed at health professionals and students of Health Sciences. The activity is coordinated by the Department of Teaching, the Patient Safety and Quality Unit and the Preventive Medicine service of the hospital center. The director of Nursing at the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital, María Cristo González, explains that the organization of this virtual meeting “is part of the international commemoration of World Hand Hygiene Day, which is celebrated annually every May 5 and that After the arrival of COVID-19, the importance of this gesture to save lives has highlighted the importance for global health. ”

The program will address the hands-on strategy implemented in the health center and the role it plays in terms of patient safety, among other aspects. The course is free and certification will be issued by the Department of Continuing Education of the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria to the attendees.

  • The Canary Islands University Hospital, through the Infection Control Area, has encouraged different hospital services to participate in the creation of videos on Tik-Tok using the hashtag # Participa5demayoHUC. In addition, posters will be placed in the hospital premises and the professionals of this Area will visit the different floors and units giving information, brochures, stickers, badges and pockets of pocket alcoholic solution to patients and professionals.

  • For its part, the General Hospital of Fuerteventura an information table will be set up at the entrance of the center and posters will be posted to commemorate this World Day. In addition, individual hydroalcoholic gels will be distributed by the different hospital services to educate patients, families and workers about the importance of a good hand washing technique in the prevention of diseases.

  • On Lanzarote, Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa and Hospital Insular will carry out different activities throughout the week. Thus, from tomorrow the control device installed at the entrances of the centers and in outpatient clinics will become training tables with health professionals in charge, who will act as trainers to promote hand hygiene. Likewise, the Nursing team has launched a challenge to the Management workers under the slogan Flood the nets with your clean hands to upload photos and images related to hand hygiene on social media. In addition, they have proposed that health workers participate in a QR code survey on the knowledge of professionals about the Hand hygiene strategy in order to find areas for improvement.

On the other hand, the FP and Nursing School students who carry out their internships at the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital will collaborate in the programmed activities with the distribution of informative material and stickers by the different units of the center, while the monitors TV stations installed in the waiting rooms and at the entrance of the Hospital will show different videos on hand hygiene.

  • The General Hospital of La Palma will project on the screens located at the entrance of the center and on its intranet an awareness video about the importance of proper hand hygiene. Posters promoting this habit will also be placed in different hospital areas.

  • On La Gomera, the Health Services Management and the Canary Islands School of Health and Social Services (ESSSCAN) held the course on April 29 Update on mobilization and transport of COVID patients in hospital centers aimed at wardens, a training action that included a training module specifically dedicated to the importance of good hand hygiene to prevent diseases. In addition, posters will be placed in the Hospital Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe aimed at professionals as well as patients and families.

  • On El Hierro, the Hospital Nuestra Señora de Los Reyes will distribute posters on the different floors of the center about World Hand Hygiene Day.
