Can I walk my dog?

Pet owners are baffled. Can we take them out or not? There is no reason for the alarm, but yes, meeting very strict standards. Dogs need to relieve themselves at least two or three times a day, so the concern among the owners is increasing. Many have opted for the untimely hours so as not to have any problems, but the truth is that it is advisable to maintain the routines.

From the association of clinical veterinarians, AEVET, and the College of Veterinarians of Madrid, dThere are six very specific guidelines: first, take the dogs on a leash at all times, in addition to minimizing the time spent on public roads to what is strictly essential. Once we go out with them on public roads, we must “keep a safe distance from the owners of other dogs.”

It is best to take the short solo walks, in no case go to a dog park where there are several, as well as avoiding groups of people.

They also ask the owners for solidarity not accumulating medicines or food, and remember that veterinary centers will be available to care for pets that require it, always by appointment.

According to Fernando Simón, isolation is for infected people and quarantines for healthy people, but says little or nothing about the need to walk pets. Animal health professionals insist that neither dogs nor cats are carriers of the virus, nor do they suffer it, nor can they infect anyone.

The problem is that to go out on the street they need a human to take them, so the recommendations are the same as for people. Stepping on the street as little as possible, never going to crowded places or not approaching less than one meter from someone else. In our country, each Autonomous Community has its own action protocols, so each autonomy must decide whether people confined at home by coronaviruses and who have animals, can go outside to walk them and under what conditions.

If we are infected, the ideal would be to leave the animal in the care of a person not affected by Covid-19. And if we are not, we must try to walk them as little as possible, better times of games and races will come. In addition, from the Royal Canine Society of Spain (RSCE) they have asked do not put masks on animals as a protection measure since they are useless.

Also where they have settled confinement rules, pet owners still need to be more restrictive at the time of the walks. remove them better twice than three a day, and only as long as necessary for your physiological needs. This is the best way to protect ourselves and our dogs.

Cats, as they can do without walks, better not step on the streets.
