Calviño chooses a technical profile from the Junta de Andalucía to occupy the 'hot seat' of the Presidency of the INE

The Government has not wanted to go on vacation without solving one of the many hot potatoes that remained in its portfolio. The Council of Ministers this Monday has approved the appointment of Elena Manzanera, until now director of the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalusia, as the new president of the INE to replace Juan Rodríguez Poo, the previous president, whose departure caused an unprecedented earthquake at the statistical institute. The first vice-president of the Government and main person in charge of the INE, Nadia Calviño, has finally opted for a technical profile from the Junta de Andalucía, an administration governed by the PP, to occupy one of the most delicate positions and which will be observed with greater detail in the coming months, after the multiple clashes caused by the discrepancies between different members of the Government with the information provided by the official statistical institute and especially after the turbulent departure of the former president of the statistical institute, who did not want to wait for the publication of his dismissal to announce his departure from the INE. In recent weeks there had been speculation that it was the former Secretary of State for Social Security, Israel Arroyo, a high-ranking official with statistical training in the field of Social Security, who would occupy this post, but the fact that it was a former senior government official and that there was no precedent for a similar movement in the recent history of the INE has advised opting for another profile.
