British flag tanker Stena Impero docks in Dubai after liberation

The British flag tanker "Stena Impero", arrested last July by Iranian authorities in the waters of the Strait of Hormuz, docked today in the port of Dubai (United Arab Emirates) after being released this Friday.

According to the Marine Traffic marine navigation tracking portal, the ship has docked at the commercial port of Al Rashid, in Dubai, after being captured by Iranian revolutionary guards weeks after an Iranian vessel was held in Gibraltar - "Adrian Darya 1" -, which allegedly carried crude oil to Syria in violation of the European Union (EU) sanctions against that country.

Yesterday, the British Ministry of Defense confirmed that the ship was heading to Dubai after being released.

The Iranian authorities had accused the "Stena Impero" of not respecting the navigation rules, which their Swedish shipping company, Stena Bulk, had rejected at all times.

The operator of "Stena Impero" had stressed that the tanker complied "fully" with all the rules on international navigation when he was intercepted in the Strait of Hormuz.

The arrest of "Stena Impero", with 23 crew members on board, occurred two weeks after the seizure of the Iranian superhero "Grace 1" by the British Navy near the coast of Gibraltar.

Gibraltar alleged that there were suspicions that this oil carrier was transporting crude to Syria, but the Iranian authorities called it an act of piracy and threatened to take retaliatory measures.

"Grace 1", now "Adrian Darya 1", was released in mid-August, although the US imposed sanctions and even offered a reward to his captain to bring him closer to a country willing to stop him again.

The capture of the "Stena Impero" caused a diplomatic crisis between Tehran and London and an escalation of tension in the Persian Gulf, where there have been numerous incidents in recent months.

To ensure the safety of navigation in the area, the US has proposed to create a coalition that Iran sees hostile to its interests, for which reason it has called for an agreement between regional countries without US interference.
