Britain’s massive underground New Year’s Eve party ends

Paris, Jan 2 (EFE) .- The clandestine New Year’s Eve party that brought together some 2,500 people in French Brittany, in violation of all the rules to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, ended this Saturday morning, with police controls at the exit .

The Prefecture (Government delegation) and the Civil Protection services indicated that the “rave” that had started on the night from Thursday to Friday in an industrial warehouse in the town of Lieuron, about 45 kilometers from Rennes, ended without the direct intervention of the forces of order, with the interruption of the music and the dismantling of the sound equipment.

The gendarmes, in any case, this morning blocked the accesses to the industrial building, from where the several hundred people who were still inside were gradually leaving to control them.

The French Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, indicated on his Twitter account that more than 1,200 fines have been imposed, that the agents continue to control the participants and also the procedures against the organizers.

It also specified that a truck, sound equipment and generators have been requisitioned.

The Prefecture had warned since Friday night on its Twitter account that all participants would be fined systematically.

The prefect of Brittany (Government delegate), Emmanuel Bertier, specified in the middle of the morning that 800 of the infringements imposed were for breaching the regulations to prevent covid, but there were also “several hundred fines” for the use of narcotics.

The president of the Departmental Council of Ile-et-Vilaine, Jean Luc Chenu, stressed this Saturday, in statements to the station “France Info” that in the current health context that France is experiencing, with a rebound in covid cases, “There is a responsibility that is unanswerable, that of the organizers” who “have to be held accountable to justice.”

In fact, the Prosecutor’s Office has already opened an investigation for non-compliance with the rules to prevent the spread of the virus, such as the night curfew in force in France from December 15 between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Also for the aggression suffered by several gendarmes when trying to intervene in the party on New Year’s Eve, and for violation of the legislation on narcotics.

In France there were other clandestine parties with hundreds of people on New Year’s Eve, but none as massive as the one in Brittany.

According to Darmanin, that night the forces of order made 45,000 controls and imposed 6,550 fines for not respecting the night curfew, which as of this Saturday will be advanced at 6:00 p.m. in a dozen departments in the east of the country where the epidemic situation has gotten worse in recent weeks.
