Brazilian authorities report the death of a volunteer in the Oxford vaccine trial

The Brazilian health authority Anvisa has reported this Wednesday the death of a volunteer who participated in clinical trials of the vaccine against COVID-19 developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, as reported by the Reuters agency. The Brazilian newspaper O Globo maintains that the person died of complications related to COVID-19.

Trials will continue and it has not been officially reported whether the deceased received the vaccine or the placebo. Half of the volunteers in the trial, which numbers more than 20,000 people, receive the vaccine and the other half receive a substance used as a placebo. Or Balloon refers to sources who maintain that the volunteer did not receive the dose.

“After careful evaluation of this case in Brazil, there is no safety concern about the clinical trial and the independent review, in addition to the Brazilian regulator, have recommended that the trial continue,” a university spokesperson said.
