Brazil will strengthen its presence in Antarctica with a new oceanographic vessel destined to provide logistic support to the activities it develops within the framework of the Brazilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR).
The details of the vessel intended by Brazil were disclosed on Tuesday by the Navy within the framework of the Latin American Exhibition of Space and Defense (Laad by its acronym in English), the largest fair of the defense sector for the region.
With the future acquisition, budgeted at 500 million reais (about 128 million dollars), the Brazilian Navy will be able to increase its activities in Antarctica.
Currently, the Navy supports the logistical work of the PROANTAR program with the vessels Ary Rongel (oceanographic) and Admiral Maximiliano (polar).
The new oceanographic vessel will replace the Ary Rangel, built in 1981 and which, with 38 years of active life, "has already completed its cycle in the cold waters of Antarctica," said a Navy spokesman.
According to the Navy, the new Antarctic Support Ship will have the capacity to operate in polar waters with the presence of ice and will expand the scope of the activities that are being carried out in the region, since it will be able to reach latitudes located further south, with What will be covered is greater coverage.
To consolidate it as one of the most modern and efficient, the ship will also have laboratories, scientific systems and state-of-the-art equipment that will provide "greater confidence in achieving the objectives in the Antarctic continent".
According to the Navy, the new vessel will also reduce the replenishment time of the Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station, which will be inaugurated in March 2020 after its reconstruction and after being destroyed by a fire seven years ago.
The complex receives professionals who act in the PROANTAR, created in 1982 to develop oceanographic and meteorological research, as well as in areas such as biology and meteorology.
In 2012, a fire destroyed almost the entire structure of the complex, intended for scientific purposes.
With an investment of close to 100 million dollars, the reconstruction was initiated in January 2018 by the China Corporation of Imports and Electronic Exports (Ceiec in its acronym in English), which was awarded the respective contract.
