Bombardier will start the resumption of its production in Canada on May 11



Bombardier confirmed on Tuesday its plans for the gradual resumption of production in Canada from May 11, which will mean the reinstatement of some 11,000 workers in the coming weeks.

A Bombardier spokesperson confirmed to Efe today that the company maintains its plans to restart production in Canada from May 11, complying “with the strictest health and safety measures and guidelines.”

Bombardier plans that almost 11,000 employees will return to their jobs in the coming weeks in the Aviation and Transport production units (dedicated to railway equipment) as well as the company’s corporate offices.

The time when workers at each plant return to their positions will be determined by the “new procedures to ensure the health and safety” of employees.

But the company will also ask employees who can do their jobs remotely to remain at home for now.

On April 28, Éric Martel, president and CEO of Bombardier, stated that as operations resume at many of its facilities, “the health and safety of our employees, customers and the general population will continue to be our top priority.” .

The gradual resumption of Bombardier’s productive activity coincides with the economic revival of Canada’s main industrial centers after weeks of forced stoppage to slow down the spread of COVID-19.

The provinces of Quebec, where Bombardier’s headquarters and several production centers are located, and Ontario, which also has manufacturing plants for the company, began the revival on Monday with the reopening of some sectors.

Bombardier plans to announce tomorrow’s financial results for the first quarter of 2020, which have been seriously affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company, which is going through a delicate economic situation, lost $ 1,607 million in 2019 and on March 12 announced the replacement of its president and CEO, Alain Bellemare, by Martel.

Bellemare’s departure came shortly after Bombardier reported the sale of its commercial aircraft and train divisions.

In mid-February, Bellemare announced the sale of the remains of its commercial aircraft division to Airbus and the province of Quebec for $ 600 million. Days later, the company sold its railway division to the French Alstom for 7,450 million euros.

The sales orchestrated by Bellemare will allow Bombardier to accumulate between 6,500 and 7,000 million dollars in liquidity and thus face 9,300 million dollars of debt of the company.
