Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro celebrated on Friday the successful launch of the third prototype of the anti-surface missile developed entirely by Brazil and which, in his opinion, demonstrates the country's technological self-sufficiency in the defense industry.
"A new success of our Armed Forces in its permanent defense of national sovereignty," said the far right leader, a captain of the Army reserve, referring to his Twitter account on the launch of the missile on Wednesday.
According to the head of state, the launch of the third prototype of the missile developed by the Brazilian Navy had "total success".
"This is the Brazil of technological self-sufficiency, congratulations to the Navy," the president concluded.
The Mansup, compatible with the MBDA launchers that count several of the ships of the Brazilian Navy, can be equipped with a warhead of explosive fragmentation of 154 kilos.
The development of the missile is the result of a project initiated 10 years ago that involves the Navy and some Brazilian companies such as Avibras, responsible for propulsion and explosive charges; SIATT, which developed the guidance, control and telemetry system; and Onmnisys, responsible for the target detection radar.
The objective of the Navy with the project is to replace the Exocet MM40 with which it has in its fleet.
The Brazilian Navy had already made two successful tests with surface-surface missile prototypes thrown into the sea from military vessels.
The first prototype was launched on November 27 last from the corvette Barroso in a test that was performed 300 kilometers from the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
A second test was conducted on March 20 from the frigate Independencia, also off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.
The third prototype was launched on Wednesday also from the frigate Independencia, off the coast of Rio and, according to the Navy, served to verify the proper functioning of all systems.
In the third test, additional verifications were made, recorded in telemetry data installed in the missile and that will be used to perfect all the systems and components.
The Navy's forecast is to start the commercial manufacture of the Mansup this year and develop adaptations that allow the missile can also be launched from helicopters and submarines.
