The BNG and the PSdeG are the only forces that at the start of 2020 already have a clear candidate for the presidential elections of the Xunta that they would play in about 10 months, in the autumn of this exercise, if the current head of the Galician Government , Alberto Núñez Feijóo, does not decide an advance.
Within the PPdeG, all eyes are directed to Núñez Feijóo, waiting for him to announce whether or not he is eligible for a fourth term. He will do it in the first quarter and it is usual that he runs out of time before announcing a decision that, as he has confessed in a recent interview with Europa Press, is not yet completely closed.
In any case, leaders of the PPdeG take it for granted that they will come forward again, since “there is no other option”, since no one is able to envision another candidate with whom the popular maintained real options to maintain the absolute majority.
From the surroundings of Feijóo, other sources consulted by Europa Press disagree and, although they admit that it would be “the most powerful candidate”, they emphasize that there are “other referents in the party” and that the remaining months until autumn, when they would play next Autonomous elections are “many” to empower another hypothetical candidate who had options.
What the different sensibilities within the party do coincide is that, at the moment, there is no electoral advance on the horizon nor is there any element that justifies not exhausting the legislature. “Being predictable” and the message of “stability” opposed to the uncertainty in the state political scenario is one of the workhorses of a party with the “always oiled” machinery.
GONZALO CABALLERO, PSDEG CANDIDATE
The Galician socialists have cleared their cartel after the appointment of their general secretary, Gonzalo Caballero, as a candidate in an internal process that took place in November last year and to which no other applicant attended.
With their chosen candidate and in view of the results of all the elections that were held throughout 2019, party sources have told Europa Press that they see the PSdeG “in shape” and “prepared” for the election date, “be whenever”.
“When Feijóo decides to convene, the PSdeG will be prepared with the conviction that this will be the year of the change as it has been seen in the previous electoral calls,” said these sources, who underline that in Galicia “there is a majority of progress”.
In this way, these sources ensure that the Galician socialists begin the year “with great enthusiasm and work” to demonstrate to the Galicians that “there is an alternative”, a “left that can be trusted to lead a progressive government.”
PONTON, “SAFE VALUE”
Like the Socialists, Galician nationalists have also opted for their leader to contest the regional race to the polls. To this end, the BNG began after the general passes the internal process that only Ana Pontón attended, who will see his candidacy formalized in the National Council of the BNG that will take place on January 11.
In this regard, management sources have highlighted the “broad level of internal agreement” that exists in the Block around the figure of Ana Pontón, whom they see as “a safe value.”
Once the nomination of Pontón is official, the Galician nationalists will begin the elaboration of their lists. A work that, according to these sources of the organization, “has a certain complexity” since it implies “a lot of democratic guarantee”.
“It is contrasted with all the militancy and not by telematic means, which is modern, but through the assembly, through debate, the contrast of opinions, in which a free and democratic opinion can really be formed”, they have indicated .
THE UNLOCKED OF ‘RUPTURISM’
In the field of ‘rupturism’ everything is unknown after a convulse 2019 that atomized the partners who, under the umbrella of the brand In Marea, managed to be second force in the regional ones of 2016. Today, In Marea travels alone under the direction of Luís Villares and Anova has distanced themselves from Podemos and Esquerda Unida after the last electoral cycle, in which there was a setback in support for the idea of ’popular unity’ that changed the Galician political landscape in 2012.
To this day, only Esquerda Unida has candidates for the regional ones with Eva Solla as headliner. The Galician federation of IU also took the initiative in the call to start the dialogue with Podemos and Anova, who are confident that it will take place before the end of January.
In Podemos, an organization that believes that there is “an overwhelming social majority” that wants a change in the Xunta, they appeal to respect the “internal processes” of each organization, but they claim to have “clear profile” of the candid to the Presidency of the ” political space “.
Anova’s relations with the US and Podemos cooled down throughout 2019. The nationalists believe that their members still in the Galician Chamber tried to impose their criteria “on the part” and doubt that the transfer of In Common to politics can work Autonomic
Now, renewed his address in a conclave held two weeks ago, Anova calls to initiate a dialogue “with all the forces to the left” of the PSdeG for the configuration of a candidacy that “dispute hegemonies”. The one in charge of piloting it will be the ex-mayor of Santiago Martiño Noriega, who could make a leap to the regional policy that he did not want to take four years ago, when he was in the pools to be a candidate for the Xunta.
Like Anova, the En Marea de Luís Villares warns that it will not act in the same way as in the past, a process to which it ruled out to participate so as not to contribute to the fragmentation of progressive options.
The party that integrates the mixed group in the Pazo do Hórreo called on BNG and Anova to articulate a “national and progressive” candidacy from which we explicitly exclude Podemos and the US, forces that are subject to the interests of their state addresses. However, the Block is not in favor of the offer and Anova seems more inclined to join the US and Podemos.
For its part, Citizens closed a 2019 marked by the loss of support from the state-level party that also had a reflection in Galicia, where the orange organization remained in November without the two deputies achieved in the April generals.
With an eye on the regional ones and with Beatriz Pino acquiring internal weight after assuming the position of deputy head of communication in the manager appointed in the party after the resignation of Albert Rivera, Citizens will try to enter the Parliament of Galicia in 2020, objective that did not reach four years ago with the journalist Cristina Losada as head of the list.
“END TO DECADES OF FILONATIONALIST POLICIES”
Vox sources consulted by Europa Press have advanced that the formation led by Santiago Abascal will be presented in Galicia with the “clear objective of being a decisive force” in the Parliament of Galicia and “thus ending decades of philonationalist policies.”
The formation, however, has not wanted to reveal for the moment the names that are shuffling to aspire to the Presidency of the Xunta when assuring that “the candidacies” will be presented “once the elections are called”.
“As announced in Ferrol by its secretary general, Javier Ortega Smith, Vox will turn to the Galician campaign” to “continue with the extraordinary electoral growth experienced in Galicia in the last year,” said these sources.
