Blessed madness: Religious goldsmith curves | Culture

In certain areas, the comedian, actor, screenwriter and Italian director Carlo Verdone is considered the great heir of Alberto Sordi. Equipped with a face and a physicist to walk around, and with that trans-Alpine way of dragging the words in the dialogues, Verdone is a popular figure in his country without, unlike the myth of Sordi, has managed to cross borders in a moment in which Italian comedy is no longer what it was at the time of the protagonist of the formidable The great war, Everyone home and A difficult life. In fact, of his 26 films as director, deployed over four decades, only seven have been released in Spain, without any having achieved the importance that, however, he did as one of the main interpreters of The great beauty, by Paolo Sorrentino.

In Holy madness, his first work on the Spanish billboard since Intimate Enemies (2006), Verdone bets for something that, outside of Italy and in 2019, sounds directly to the past: the contrast between the daring modes of behavior, dress and language of a woman, and the forms and traditions of Catholicism. Theme for which goes to an atmosphere that, in principle, has grace: a shop-tailoring where you can buy sacred art as the cassock of a priest, the veil of a nun that the pomp of a bishop.

However, the sequences of the business may be the only ones that go out of the ordinary and that provide a certain comedy. The dichotomy between the Italian woman and the sixties is somewhat rancid, as well as the carousel of women of the film, with a diversity, at least, debatable: cruel, eccentric, nympho or short lights. As an interpreter, Verdone can be spontaneous and close, but as a director his importance seems reduced to the local circuit of Italian cinema for Italians.
