Athletics is his great passion. At 32 years of age, the sprinter from Gran Canaria continues with strength and desire to continue lowering marks and reaching new goals. A year ago she started motherhood and the birth of Michelle continues to motivate her to train and compete.

Elite athletics in Gran Canaria has been forgotten, but there are still enthusiastic athletes. Sheila Cubas is an example of this. The Vecindario athlete, a member of Tenerife CajaCanarias, continues to compete at the highest level.

-Motherhood debuts and at eleven months we see her in a Spanish championship.

–So it has been. Between injuries, the pandemic, pregnancy and studying for a master's degree it hasn't been easy at all, but giving birth and at eleven months seeing myself competing in a new Spanish championship has been wonderful. And I am very happy with the result, since I finished 13th with a time of 11.88. On a personal level I was very satisfied, since the road to reach this championship has not been easy at all.

-In 2017 she was third in the Spanish indoor championship, in the 60-meter dash, and she has been fifth in the open air in the 100-meter dash. And she attended an international meeting in 2018, with the Spanish team in relay. She passes the years and she continues in the fight. What excites her to move forward?

-It motivates me to continue improving my marks. I have 11.70 in the 100 meters, a time I achieved in 2016, and now I have done 11.88, so I am still confident that I can beat my best time. I think it's possible. In the 60-meter dash, my best mark is 7.50.

–He holds the Canary Islands record for the 60-meter dash and the third best mark in the 100-meter dash. She has become a benchmark for speed in the Canary Islands. What do you think of the current state of athletics in Gran Canaria?

–You only look at the base, at the children. But in Gran Canaria if an athlete turns 18 there is no future, since the opportunities are nil. There is a lot of talent, but there is no planning and at that age the fundamental thing is to be able to compete.

What other hobbies do you have apart from athletics?

Right now my priority is my daughter. Skating and being with friends are other options, although I recognize that with athletics there is not much time for a social life, especially when championships are approaching in which we train and rest are essential.

– Next goals?

I have to go little by little. We will face next season with enthusiasm and we will see the objectives that arise.

– Do you have enough rope for a while?

-LOL. I don't know, but right now I'm really looking forward to it. I think I can still extend my career a few more years.

– Where do you usually train?

-In the Martin Freire. I normally train six days a week, from Monday to Saturday.

– What do you do professionally?

-I'm a nutritionist and I just finished a master's degree.

So take good care of your diet.

-Effectively. I like cooking and I also make very healthy desserts. I like to innovate with my dishes, hahaha.

–Would you like to continue in veteran category championships when you finish your career at the absolute level?

-I do not see it. After many years competing at a high level, then it doesn't motivate me to see myself in that category. Now I am still focused on facing a new 2022-2023 season and going little by little with the objectives that I am setting.

– What is athletics?

– For me it is a way of life. I started when I was nine years old and at 32 I continue with it.
