Before and after of one of the (supposed) most erotic Caravaggios

The Archbishopric of Toledo has presented this Thursday the restoration of Saint John in the desert attributed to Caravaggio, carried out by the Chapter of the Primate Cathedral and which has been returned to its place in the Toledo cathedral.

The painting arrived at the cathedral in 1785. From that moment on, the canvas was treated with improper restorations, additions, varnishing and repainting, in an attempt to improve the painting, but these interventions 'distorted' the true picture of the spectacular painting.

The investigation and restoration process have lasted a year and a half, and have been carried out by a team of historians, archivists, specialists in infrared and ultraviolet photography and physical-chemical technicians specialized in non-destructive artistic material.

In Spain there are only four frames on which there is no doubt of the authorship of Caravaggio. One of them, Salomé with the head of the Baptist, was returned to public view on February 15 in the Stucco Cabinet of the Royal Palace of Madrid. The Ecce homo that has been attributed to him has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest but its authorship remains in dispute.
