Nothing less than 25 years have passed since the historic Guaguas conquered on the track of the Insular Sports Center its last title in the Copa del Rey volleyball, of the six of its record. A quarter of a century later, the new project of the Gran Canaria club, which is experiencing its first season in competition, is once again hosting the cup-bearer tournament and starts with the same objective, to lift the trophy on Sunday.

And to achieve this, he must first save the quarterfinal and semi-final exams. All heads or tails. The first challenge comes today. The yellow squad is measured in the third match of the opening day against Galician Boiro from 5:00 p.m. at the Avenida Marítima enclosure.

A clash that Sergio Miguel Camarero's pupils face with confidence, but also with respect for a rival they have beaten 3-0 in their Super League duels. Head to head, one of the favorites to the final victory against a rookie in the cup competition.

If this first touchstone is solved, Guaguas will face in the semifinals, tomorrow at 5:00 p.m., the winner of the other duel on their side of the table, the one that measures this morning (10:00 a.m.) Unicaja Costa de Almería, king of the KO competition in terms of number of titles, and Melilla Sport Capital.

On the other side of the table are the other two teams indicated, along with Guaguas and Almería, as possible winners of this Copa del Rey 2021, Teruel, current champion and leader of the Superliga, and Urbia Energía Vóley Palma.

Both aim to star in the other semifinal tomorrow (7.30pm). But previously they must solve their respective quarter commitments. The Mallorcan team sees them today (12.30 pm) with Manacor, in the Balearic derby of the tournament. For its part, the Teruel squad has Ibiza Ushuaïa Volley as an adversary this afternoon (7.30 pm).

Yellow fort

Returning to the debut of the Guaguas, the yellows hope to maintain their hegemony on the track of the Insular Sports Center as far as the Spanish competition is concerned. In their fort, Sergio Miguel Camarero's men do not know defeat yet.

The host arrives at the event as second classified in the Superlight with a balance of 17 victories and only two lost games so far this year, driven by a positive inertia that makes him the great favorite for the title together with Teruel.

The potential of the Gran Canaria team is demonstrated by the quality of its squad, in which the seven usual starters have been at least once included in the ideal team of the day this season, which joins a dream bench to make up a balanced squad in all its positions.

Meanwhile, his rival, the Galician Borro, reaches this clash without pressure. For the newly promoted to the highest category it is already a great prize to be in the Cup.

The fans, if the regional authorities do not remedy it, will be the great absentee in this edition of the Copa del Rey volleyball that starts today at the Insular Sports Center. As the island of Gran Canaria is at Level 3 alert for Covid-19, the public is prevented from attending sporting events. But the host club, Guaguas, does not resist trying until the last minute for at least 300 people to be in the stands of the Avenida Marítima venue. The entity chaired by Juan Ruiz has presented a proposal to the Government of the Canary Islands, offering antigen tests to fans who want to attend the games. While waiting for whether or not these efforts finally bear fruit, fans can follow the cup tournament matches through various platforms. The entire competition can be seen live on
