BBVA dismisses its head of internal control one day after the bank's imputation in the Villarejo case

The head of regulation and internal control of BBVA, Eduardo Arbizu, leaves the bank after 17 years in the group and just one day after the National Court will charge the entity in the Villarejo case for the crimes of bribery, revelation of secrets and corruption in business.

BBVA has not explained the exit of Arbizu, which will be replaced by the one that until now was the director of non-financial risks, Ana Fernández Manrique, as the bank has detailed in a statement.

The investigation of the judge of the National Court Manuel García Castellón is part of the ninth piece of the 'Tandem case', related to the work performed by the ex-commissioner, who has been in pretrial detention since November 2017, for 13 years in exchange for a estimated amount of about 10 million euros.

During that period Arbizu was responsible for the legal services of the bank. Specifically, he was the general director of legal services at BBVA between 2002 and 2003, when he assumed the direction of legal services. In 2007, he was also assigned the tax advice, audit and compliance directorates. In 2011 he was appointed global director of legal and compliance and in 2018 he promoted to global director of regulation and internal control, reporting directly to the board of directors.

The departure of Arbizu from the entity occurs four days after cessation of the president of Distrito Castellana Norte (DCN), Antonio Béjar, investigated in the well-known case Villarejo. Béjar already declared as investigated on July 4, when he acknowledged that the company Cenyt was hired as a supplier in this department between 2010 and 2013 to locate delinquent. However, he stressed that he did not know that the company was owned by the retired commissioner.

Arbizu will be replaced by Ana Fernández Manrique, who has been working in the group for 25 years in the fields of finance, strategy and M&A, real estate and retail banking, among others. "I am very excited and I want to thank the confidence placed in me to face this great challenge," said Fernández Manrique.
