Barcelona advances a crash plan with a view to reducing emissions by 6%

Barcelona City Council plans to reduce CO2 emissions by 210,000 tons, 6% per year, and to do so, it will advance 10 shock measures, such as reducing a lane in high traffic flows and limiting speed in key points of the city.

The Mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, chaired Wednesday the constitution of the Climate Emergency Bureau of the Catalan capital that will prepare the contents of the Declaration of Climate Emergency that the city plans to enact on January 1, 2020, coinciding with the entry into force of the Low Emissions Zone of Barcelona.

The objective is to reduce CO2 emissions by 210,000 tons, by 6% annually, with the implementation of the Low Emissions Zone and ten immediate measures whose content has already been advanced today and which will be applied without waiting for the declaration to become official. .

The announcement takes place the same day that the Eurocomisario of Environment, Karmenu Vella, has requested to Spain additional measures on quality of the air to palliate the levels of dioxide of nitrogen (NO2) that, in cities like Madrid or the metropolitan area of Barcelona , violate the limits established by European regulations.

Among these measures advanced by the City Council, which will lead to a reduction in emissions equivalent to 20 tons of CO2 per year, include the creation of a new bus lane on Aragó street and the reduction of a car traffic lane on Mallorca street, on the Meridiana stretch -Diagonal.

Likewise, circulation through the streets of Rocafort, Sicilia, Ausiàs March, Compte Borrell, Gran de Gràcia, and the Joan de Borbó and Sant Joan promenades will be limited to 30 kilometers per hour.

Colau has stressed that Barcelona does not want "an emergency decree 'fake', rhetorical", but a decree "real, concrete, ambitious and coherent."

At the meeting, the municipal government has announced other changes in mobility to reduce emissions such as completing new stretches of superblocks, the creation of new ones and studying fiscal measures to fight against congestion and pollution.
