The Barcelona announced on Friday an agreement with the forward Álex Abrines, who will sign up June 2021, with a more optional season, according to the Catalan entity.
Abrines, 25 years and 1.98 meters, returns to Barça after three years playing in the Oklahoma City Thunder of the NBA. The present will be the second stage at Barça. The previous one lasted for four seasons (2012-16).
That summer, the Spaniard started the road to the NBA. There with the Thunder he played 174 games in the three seasons he stayed on the Oklahoma team, with averages of 5.3 points and 16 minutes per game.
Average a 37% success in triples, his specialty in the game. In the first two seasons in the NBA, Abrines acted as an escort, but in the last year he played many minutes as a forward.
This will be the second stage of Abrines with Barça. In the previous one he arrived in the summer of 2012 from Unicaja de Málaga and played four seasons under Xavi Pascual.
The Mallorcan, in that four-year period, played a total of 255 games in all competitions and won three titles: Copa del Rey (2013), Liga ACB (2014) and Supercopa (2015).
In his first stage as a Barça player, he was also chosen as the best young player in the Euroleague for the 2015-16 academic year when he was 22 years old.
Its stage in Oklahoma was truncated after finishing its relation with the Thunder in a decision explained time later. In fact, Abrines published a video a few days ago in which he unveiled what happened.
"Basketball, I came to hate you, I lived a nightmare, I avoided you whenever I could," says Abrines in the video, which showed that he had suffered some kind of depression.
The signing of Abrines is the fourth of Barça for the next year after those of Cory Higgins (CSKA), Brandon Davies (Zalguiris Kaunas) and Nikola Mirotic (Milwaukee Bucks). Abrines will be presented next Monday at 7:00 pm at the Palau Blaugrana.
