Banco de México presents a 200-peso banknote that is more secure and independent

The Bank of Mexico (Banxico) presented on Monday the entry into circulation of the new 200-peso bill (about $ 10) with new security measures to combat counterfeiting and with symbols to commemorate the country's independence, which is celebrated this month.

The figures of the independence heroes Miguel Hidalgo, "The Father of the Fatherland", and José María Morelos, "The Servant of the Nation", will replace that of the writer Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, who appears on the current ticket , which will remain in circulation until it deteriorates naturally over time.

Even so, Alejandro Alegre, general director of Issuance of the Bank of Mexico, clarified that this new family of banknotes, the sixth in the history of the institution, will incorporate more women than ever and that Sor Juana will appear in the new paper of 100 pesos ( about 5 dollars), which will be launched in the second half of 2020.

"It was arranged that there will be five men and four women in the new Mexican banknotes, which is a larger representation of women than historically there has been in the national numismatics," the central bank official told the media after the presentation at the Club of Bankers of Mexico.

The official explained that by the end of this year there will already be around 230 million pieces in circulation, the printing cost of which is slightly more than one weight for each one, made with materials such as cotton substrate that are intended to increase their useful life. from the current 48 months to 55 months.

In addition, he said that "the counterfeit index in Mexico has been reduced," with 96,000 false units detected last year, so the new bill incorporates security measures that will allow the rate to be reduced to only 60 counterfeits per million copies .

During the presentation, the governor of the Bank of Mexico, Alejandro Díaz de León, said that "over the next few years the new denominations of this new family will continue to appear," which began last year with the 500-peso bill (some 25 dollars) with the image of Benito Juárez (1806-1872), the president responsible for the reform laws.

On the obverse of the figures of Hidalgo and Morelos, on the new 200-peso bill (about $ 10), the El Pinacate and Great Altar Desert biosphere reserve appears in the northern state of Sonora, considered a natural heritage of humanity.

"Banco de México seeks to include topics and content related to the history, culture or natural heritage of the country that generate empathy, pride and sense of belonging among the population," said the governor.

The next piece to be announced will be the 1,000 pesos bill (about 50 dollars) in which the figures of the Mexican Revolution of Francisco I. Madero, Carmen Serdán and Hermila Galindo will appear.

The issuing institute also analyzes to launch for the first time in 2023 a 2,000-peso bill (about $ 100), a new one of 20 pesos (approximately one dollar) that celebrates in 2021 the 200 years of the consummation of independence and a currency of 20 pesos (about one dollar) that commemorate the 500 years of the founding of the city of Veracruz.
