Atlético and its peculiar vertigo | sports

A strange vertigo runs through journalism and the fans when Atlético de Madrid displays a great game and wins, as happened against Getafe, the team that nobody wants to have in front of them. Its main specialty is to screw the rival and turn the matches into an insurmountable succession of problems. He came to the Metropolitan with 14 goals against in 20 games, an exceptionally low percentage that explains the characteristics of a rough, astute and competitive team. Measuring yourself with Getafe requires more than football skills. It requires a mental integrity of the first degree.

Less than the victory – with Simeone as coach, Atlético has never lost with Getafe, nor has it received a goal -, highlighted the splendid game of the team, amid the ovations of the public, who in the second time enjoyed it in a big way. He did not lack reasons for enthusiasm. He transferred his high possession (66%) to a brilliant offensive, executed with speed, precision and dynamism: choral football of category presided over by the continuous interventions of Thomas and Rodri, 99 and 98 passes each, a figure barely seen in the Simeone era .

Atlético was as compact as on their best defensive days -Oblak officiated as a privileged spectator- and with more flight than usual in the attacking chapter. The team that celebrated that very complete performance was composed of a goalkeeper, three world champions -Lucas, Griezmann and Lemar-, two mythical centers in the history of the club -Godín and Giménez-, two young Spanish internationals -Saúl and Rodri-, a Colombian international air player -Arias- and a midfielder, Thomas, who increasingly incorporates more technical resources to its tremendous deployment. Next to them, a striker forward: Kalinic.

Although on the eve of the meeting prevailed the information about the numerous injuries of the team, nobody could discuss the enormous football possibilities of that lineup, in conditions to compete with the best on the planet. The entry of young Mollejo by Kalinic further improved the game of Atletico and the happiness of the fans.

One of the problems of the Athletic one is its difficult coexistence with a type of game that seems taboo. Taken to the extreme of parody, it seems that playing well, in the classic sense of the term, feels bad for the team. It is received with suspicion, with a guilty fear, that of the attack on the fundamental pillars of the model established by Simeone, which usually prevents against the optimism of the heterodox.

The fact is that people do not know what to think. The Atlético campaign encourages high-altitude football, but the team is educated in a model that has produced the best decade of its history. Two seasons ago, Atlético started the championship with two draws (Alavés and Leganés) and some amazing statements by Griezmann: "If we continue like this, we will fight the descent". He was invoiced. Six days later, the team led the League, with 21 goals in favor and three against, a difference that surpassed that of Real Madrid and Barcelona. That team scored four goals to Celta, five to Sporting and seven to Granada in a series of five wins and the draw with Barca at the Camp Nou. In the midst of general fervor, a negative discourse broke out: Atlético is wrong with that style, it does not appear in the cookbook, it moves away from the path. It is not convenient, in short.

The effect of that absurd debate reached the team. The defeat (0-3) against Real Madrid knocked Atlético out of the wheel and meant the definitive return to orthodoxy. It is the strange dialectic that weighs on a team that explores with apprehension its fantastic potential, to the point of turning the good game into suspicious matter.
