At the age of 70, ex-Culture Minister Carmen Alborch dies


The Socialist Minister of Culture Carmen Alborch has died this Wednesday in Valencia at 70 years of age after a long illness, as confirmed to EFE PSOE sources.

Alborch, who has died at home, was also a deputy in the Congress, a councilor at Valencia City Council and director of the Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM), as well as a writer.

The last public appearance of Alborch took place on the 9th of October, Dia de la Comunitat Valenciana, when received the High Distinction of the Generalitat. In his speech, as he also served as a spokesperson for the winners, asserted that feminism "should be declared a World Heritage Site".

Carmen Alborch was Minister of Culture of the Government between 1993 and 1996, as well as deputy of the socialist group in three legislatures. In 2007 she was a candidate for mayor of València, serving as a socialist spokesperson at City Hall until June 2011.

Numerous distinctions are included in her curriculum for her struggle for equality between women and men, such as the Progressive Women's Award, the Meridiana Award from the Junta de Andalucía, the Rosa Manzano Award 2007 and the Gabriela Sánchez Aranda Award 2009. She is an honorary member of the Association Classic and Modern and the Association of Women Researchers and Technologists (AMIT). In addition, she has also received the 2015 Generando Arte Award granted by the Generando Arte Association of women artists.
